Let me tell you a story. Everyday, I pass through a street in which some vendors were settling around. I remember moving across the road when I heard one vendor speaking a foreign language. I am totally clueless of his lexis but one thing is for sure, he sells something. From that day on I constantly hear his seemingly endless spiel. After a month or so, I was surprised when I suddenly understood what the man was saying.
How on earth did it happen? According to linguists, humans have a built-in language apparatus that receives inputs from a perceived sound. It is then processed for further understanding using association.
By using radio programs, you can understand and learn French. You can start by listening to French radio station or online radio to get the desired exposure to French language. Have it run for hours because even if you are not giving your 100 percent concentration to what is being said, some of the words will just sink in as your subconscious mind will adopt it. This is what we call effortless learning process through hearing.
Try to acquire French audio-books and copy it to your IPod so that you can always listen to it even when you are driving your car or you’re in the gym. For versatility, you can use a converter to covert files from your IPod to radio and begin learning French as you listen to it every day. You won’t get disappointed of the result, it would even surprise you!
However, learning French could be a bit faster if you don’t just listen to it but practice as well. Do not be discouraged if you constantly make mistakes, just practice, practice and more practice. Imitate the sound you hear from the native speakers on radio and learn at your own speed. You will notice that you can pronounce French words and phrases better when you persistently mimic it.
